Here's the first couple of thoughts on the sculpture. Just two quick studies to get a feeling about what we could do.

Then it was time to set up the shade. At this point sitting on my work bench, it was still just an idea and much of the project
was still undiscovered.

After a few discussions with the dog park we began with the armature. It was a challenge to create a figure using only flat pieces of metal. The armature was a guide as I began to construct the man.

After a few corrections, it was time to create the surface of the man. I used 1/4" steel and cut all the pieces with a plasma torch then attached them together to the armature.

Here's a great shot of him in progress at the studio. Many of the pieces are in place and he's beginning to reveal himself.

Working out the clothes here with the modern design of the man, the clothes needed to also carry the theme. With this abstract outfit, he's now ready to go out into the public. This outfit was modeled after the Wampanoag Indian clothing. Simple loin cloth.

It was time to make the spiral for the shade sail. This was a challenge. First I designed the shape on paper. My art space wouldn't allow me to make it indoors so out in the driveway we rolled out the pattern paper and with spray paint, designed the shape.

The spiral is made of 1-1/2" pipe, similar to hand rails. The pipe was sent through a roller and many sections were curled. Then each piece was layed out and curled on the paper pattern. After all the sections of pipe followed the design, I began to weld each piece together creating one continuous hoop. It was a huge thing and again revealed just how big the project would be.

The hoop was finished and it was time to make the patterns for the sail shades. The way I did this next step was to use rope to follow the outline of the shade sails. After I stretched out the rope, I used more paper patterns to make the sail shade templates.

Finaly finished all the welding on the fisherman and got him outside for some final pictures before paint.

Got the first application of the painting process. This is a flexible rubber undercoating. Good base for paint over steel.

Installation day!

I thought these pictures were interesting only because the shadow from one of the three poles that holds the shade was cast into the park and lines up perfectly with the pole that we mounted on the rock. It almost looks like the shadows are coming from both directions but they are really both coming from the lower right.
I just thought it was a cool optical illusion.

Bolting together the hoop at the park. It was so big, we couldn't get it over the Sagamore in one piece.
